Guatemala's army must continue to support the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC) in domestic security operations for at least another two presidential terms, the defence minister Francisco Bermúdez divulged. Somewhat bizarrely his announcement on 30 September did not attract as much attention as President Oscar Berger's promise to keep on 3,000 soldiers for the whole of 2007 to assist the PNC to combat organised crime.
